The process of downsizing is just that: a process. But it is not one that you need to approach with dread or live in fear of; with the right planning tools and the right support, you can start your next chapter with less stress and less stuff too!
Whether you are still toying with the idea of downsizing (or rightsizing as we prefer!) or have a firm deadline in place, we believe that asking yourself these 10 questions will help you identify the steps you need to take and who/what can help you accomplish them!
10 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Downsize
#1: Is this likely the last move you will ever make? (Moving at 55 and 70 is not uncommon and does impact your process!)
#2: Is this a local move or a relocation? (Moving costs rise exponentially with distance so taking even 1-2 big furniture items may not make sense or cents.)
#3: Is this a change in home type only, or a change from independent living to a residence along a care continuum? (The types of services provided and amenities offered might mean you may never need an ironing board or lawn mower again!)
#4: Is there a resale market for the types of things I’d like to sell… or is it just wishful thinking? (Many homeowners overestimate the market demand for furniture and certain types of collectibles and accessories; there are professionals who can provide time and stress-saving perspective.)
#5: Am I going to allow myself a ‘maybe’ pile? (Most people sort according to Keep, Sell, Donate, Gift To Loved Ones & Throw Away. The ‘maybe’ pile can slow down the process, but the lack of one can create more stress for many individuals too. It’s a highly personal choice. )
#6: How handy is my measuring tape…? If you have an idea of what size your next space will be, many homeowners find it handy to tape off a space within their current home of that capacity to gain a visual while sorting and packing.
#7: Have I considered how technology can help manage my donations? (Facebook Marketplace, Buy Nothing Groups, NextDoor, Apps such as Letgo,5Miles and OfferUp may streamline connections with buyers or individuals to donate to.)
#8: What are some self-care items that will re-energize me on the days I feel drained? (A little self-care goes a long way in easing the stressors of any move. Coffee with a friend, reading an old favorite book one chapter a night, pacing yourself…whatever you do, be as kind to yourself as you would be to a friend going through the same thing.)
#9: What might I need the most support with? (A professional move manager can support your entire process or just one aspect, often with just a 4-hour minimum!)
#10: What am I most looking forward to when this is all done? (Don’t forget to let that light at the end of the tunnel shine. 😉 )
